Sir Dancelot,

Great story. I have a moment between patients and just caught your post. It is definitely a keeper. Thanks for the chuckle, it's a tough day so far, office wise.

Your humble squire,

Joel

LindyBill,

<< For the scientific, engineering, or inquiring mind >>

After reading your "railroad gauge" story I clipped the text and pasted it into a fax to send to my regular golfing partner who is and old railroad guy, and currently in the process of selling his very successful railroad supply business to enter into full retirement.

Before I got a chance to send the fax, he called to confirm our next tee time.

I said: "Hey, your an old railroad guy, what is US standard railroad gauge?"

He immediately replied: "56.5 inches"

After a little mental math I said: "4 feet 8.5?"

He said: "Thats right, I didn't know you could calculate that quickly".

I said: "How was that arrived at?"

He said: "That was the width of the wheels of a Roman chariot".

I said: "Darned, you must have seen this thing that was floating around the Internet that I was about to fax you"

He said: "No. You know I don't use the Internet, but everybody in the railroad industry knows that US railroad gauge was determined by the width of a Roman Chariot wheel span".

I said: "Well, do you know how that relates to the design of the track for the Space shuttle?"

He said: "I have no idea".

He enjoyed the fax. Guaranteed it is now all over the railroad industry, coast to coast.
