(Photo: newscom.com Photo: newscom.com The ''Home of the Future ... Today'' puts high speed Internet services at a family's fingertips, bringing to life Cisco and Excite@Home's vision for practical uses of the Internet in nearly every room of the house. The Home of the Future demonstrates how the power and speed of cable is rapidly moving its adoption mainstream as fast Internet access becomes as essential to the home as the telephone.
''The buzz with consumers today is all about bigger, better, faster Internet connections. We wanted to take the education process a step further by putting a real-live wired home right in the heart of Manhattan,'' said Adam Grosser, president, subscriber networks for Excite@Home. ''Not only are we showing the latest in cool digital appliances, but we're showing where the online experience can go in the future. We're giving people the chance to experience first-hand the satisfaction of ultra-fast Web content that pops on screen in seconds, not mind numbing minutes.''
''Cisco envisions a converged network for the home, connecting PCs, phones, TVs and other Internet appliances via a high-speed connection that is always on,'' said Robba Benjamin, vice president and general manager of Cisco's consumer line of business. ''Cisco is deploying this technology today. Home networks begin to lay the groundwork for Cisco's long-term vision to use the Internet to connect everyone to everything.''
Work, Play, Learn and Shop Scenarios Showcase Cable Internet Benefits
The Manhattan home will demonstrate how members of the fictitious ''Miller Family'' use high-speed Internet services. Each room of the house depicts realistic scenarios that show how a family's daily life can benefit from the convenience of a fast, ''always-on'' Internet service. The following examples will be demonstrated:
-- The Living Room: The Miller family uses interactive TV to shop online, check e-mail, and send messages to friends and family. Home automation software lets the family adjust the lighting, set the burglar alarm and turn household appliances on and off. -- The Office: From the home office, Mr. or Mrs. Miller make phone calls over the Internet, telecommute, pay bills online and hold video-conferences with co-workers and clients. A nanny-camera keeps tabs on the kids in another part of the house. -- The Child's Room: The Miller children download the hottest tunes off the Internet, get help with homework assignments, play interactive games -- all under the watchful eye of the nanny camera. -- The Kitchen: Using their refrigerator with built-in Internet capabilities, the Millers can check their daily schedule, get the latest news, traffic and weather reports, and electronically update the grocery list and download it to a personal digital assistant, then transmit the list right to a Web grocery store.
