Monday October 4, 1:33 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release IBM Brings New Light and Color to ThinkPad i Series SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 1999--IBM takes design to a new level by bringing a splash of color and a host of new hardware and software enhancements to its popular family of notebooks for individuals: the ThinkPad i Series. The new ThinkPad i Series 1400 Series can be tailored to please most discriminating users through an array of seven optional colored covers(a), ($29.99) which can be mixed and matched to suit their mood. The covers attach easily, enabling users to swap from classic ThinkPad black to brighter or deeper colors including; Mars Red Metallic, Terra Green Metallic, Eclipse Blue Metallic, Lunar Gray Metallic, Sirius Red, Andromeda Green and Polaris Blue (estimated availability, mid-December).
Beyond the aesthetics, the ThinkPad i Series are brimming with new productivity tools and applications that make it even easier for users to map their computing needs to their lifestyles. In another first for ThinkPad, IBM is introducing the ThinkLight(TM) (models 1460 and 1480 only), which is a small LED that illuminates the keyboard and palm rest in low-light conditions. This ThinkPad innovation will prove useful for a wide group of users, from dorm students pulling all-nighters to red-eyed airline travelers.
''We've spent a considerable amount of time designing the new ThinkPad i Series to be easy-to-use, while incorporating all of the aspects that have made ThinkPad the most prestigious name in mobile computing,'' said Adalio Sanchez, general manager IBM Mobile Computing. ''In addition to our industry renowned keyboard, excellent system configurations, and our award winning service and support, these products have been designed so each individual can tailor the ThinkPad i Series to fit his or her needs and personality.''
Quick and easy access to useful Web pages and e-mail is important to many users, and thanks to an expanded relationship between IBM and Lycos, users can now easily launch co-branded IBM/Lycos sites by pressing one of the four color-coded Easy Launch buttons (Requires Internet account, available separately). The sites include a personal home page; an advanced search page; a consumer page that directs and recommends sites for Web shopping; and a messaging page offering free e-mail. Users also have the option to customize the Easy Launch buttons for one-touch access to their favorite Web pages or any application they frequently use.
Enhanced Multimedia
Two of the three new ThinkPad i Series 1400 models (1460 and 1480) feature DVD and large 14-inch TFT displays, so the ThinkPad can double as a personal entertainment center. Users can simply connect their ThinkPad i Series into their home television set to watch their favorite movies or watch DVD movies wherever they are -- on the airplane or anywhere else. By incorporating ATI Rage Mobility-M acceleration hardware and 2X Accelerated Graphic Port (AGP), the new ThinkPad i Series enables improved performance of 3D applications and DVD playback (on models 1460 and 1480).
For music lovers, the ThinkPad i Series can play music CDs for up to six hours even when the system is off and closed. New features make playing and listening to music even easier and enjoyable, thanks to the dedicated Media Center with volume control and a bright LCD information panel, which are conveniently located on the front of the system. Rounding out the stereo system are superb Altec Lansing® SoundGuide speakers with 3D positional sound capability, which are positioned at the sides of the display for crisp and direct sound to the user.
All-in-One Design and Easy To Use
ThinkPad i Series notebooks feature IBM's famous all-in-one design that provides quick and easy access to multiple media sources (HDD, FDD, CD-ROM or DVD). Touch typists will enjoy IBM's ergonomically-designed full-sized keyboard, IBM's precise TrackPoint® pointing device with Internet Scroll Bar and a roomy wrist rest, sculpted for maximum comfort.
