ONdigital subscriber tally to get soccer boost
LONDON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - British pay-TV company ONdigital is set to report strong subscriber figures next week, boosted by its live Champions' League soccer broadcasts, though take-up may be held back by limited supplies of its digital TV decoders.

ONdigital, owned by TV companies Carlton Communications Plc and Granada Group Plc, is expected to report next Thursday that it signed up 350,000-380,000 subscribers by the end of September, according to media analysts.

That would be at least a 42 percent rise from the 247,000 reported at the end of June.

Next week's results will be the first set of figures for ONdigital's new chief executive, Stuart Prebble, who has seen a string of executives depart since the surprise resignation of his predecessor, Stephen Grabiner, in July.

ONdigital's figures will likely come under close scrutiny after last quarter's tally was disputed by its bigger rival, BSkyB.

BSkyB, 40-percent-owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. argued that ONdigital's number of paying subscribers was actually 204,000 at the end of June rather than 247,000.

ONdigital later conceded that its subscriber count included 10,000 shops that didn't pay for display models and 33,000 people who had signed an agreement to receive the service but had not been switched on.

For the third quarter, though, ONdigital should show a big boost as soccer fans moved to sign up for the 30-channel service ahead of the European Champions' League.

"Demand was very strong in September because of the UEFA Champions' League," said Mathew Horsman, media analyst at Investec Henderson Crosthwaite.

But he added that ONdigital probably would have been able to sign up more customers during the third quarter if more of its digital TV decoders had been available in shops.

ONdigital has struggled since its launch last November to keep up with demand, particularly since it matched rival BSkyB's offer in June and started giving away its digital TV decoders to lure subscribers.

"They're finally getting the volumes (of decoders) up in October, November, December to get close to what the demand is," Horsman said. "That does mean that they're gearing up for quite a successful Christmas. It's unfortunate they didn't have the boxes available to pick up all of the demand on UEFA."

ONdigital has UK pay TV rights to the Champions' League, expanded this season to a 32-team format and including English teams Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. It is also the only major digital TV platform to carry ITV, Britain's most popular TV channel, which also shows Champions' League action.

ITV, dominated by ONdigital's owners, has refused to allow ONdigital's bigger rival, BSkyB, to carry its Channel Three network on the 140-channel SkyDigital service.

BSkyB struck back by ensuring that its exclusive coverage of the Ryder Cup golf tournament would not be available on the Sky channels that ONdigital carries.

Maya. I think settops adds more than $3M this Q. VCD is probably down. C-Cube's taking reserves against Divicom's revenues to pay for the MV-40 up-grade to MV-45. $103M seems right, but that quake could have moved that number, with higher being more likely.
