DCF, I remember many years ago when I enlisted in the Air Force. All of the thousands of recruits were required to attend Church the first Sunday that we were there. Do you know what it sounds like to hear that many soldiers singing "Onward Christian Soldiers?" That has been one of my favorite religious hymns ever since. I was and still am deeply democratic. One nation, under God, indivisible.

Yes, as you know that God is our Christian God known as Jesus Christ. No one could make me believe otherwise.

How about you?

Santiago

Dan,
I am grateful for the freedoms afforded me. They are not afforded me by Christianity. It does not say that anywhere. It does specifically talk about separation of Church and State.

Anything else is inference.

Mark

America was not established as a Christian nation.

Indeed not. The original "freedom from religion" changed to "freedom of religion" only much later. What was it, 60 years or so before the first Christian president?

What a chuckle to have Adams and Jefferson campaigning against each other, each calling the other the atheist. Both were good men (in spite of Clintonian revisionist history) but neither were Christians.

Nevertheless, a central feature of this country's guiding principles has been the freedom to worship how one chooses, or not, without interference from the government. A very healthy notion, and one that we've lived up to very imperfectly.

I cannot help but feel that this topic has been explored at some length. Before wading into such a thread, my general practice has been to read the thread in its entirety. Please forgive me for not doing that in this case -- you've had a lively discussion going here for some time!

If this topic is not comfortable, I'll move along.<g>
