Oct. 10 (San Jose Mercury News/KRTBN)--KUDOS TO 2 FOR IMPROVING U.S.-JAPAN TIES: As recently as 10 years ago, Silicon Valley -- and indeed much of the United States -- viewed Japan as an enemy bent on destroying key areas of the American economy, including the semiconductor and automobile industries.

Today that rancor has almost disappeared. Although many American and Japanese companies still compete fiercely, others have formed successful partnerships. Some companies compete in certain business areas and cooperate with their Japanese rivals in others.

While many factors contributed to this reconciliation, two electronics industry leaders deserve special credit: Akio Morita, the longtime leader of Sony Corp. who died recently, and Jim Morgan, chief executive of Applied Materials Inc. of Santa Clara, who will receive the Japan Society of Northern California's award of honor Friday.
