SW, watching QSND this a.m. on TA (%K rose above %D on stochastics @ 20), and news: (COMTEX) B: Mitsubishi Electronics Introduces Industry's First Chip t B: Mitsubishi Electronics Introduces Industry's First Chip to Integrate QSound Labs' QSurround Technology with Tone Control Features SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct 5, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- QSurround(TM) Technology Licensing Fee is Bundled into the Chip Price, Freeing Customers from Having to License the Technology Themselves The Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc. and QSound Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:QSND), today announced Mitsubishi's M61500FP Sound Processor, which incorporates QSound Labs' Matrix Decoder/Virtualizer (QMDV(tm)) technology into the chip's tone-control integrated circuitry for use in audio applications such as stereo television, audio system and home theater. The first in a new family of QSurround-based sound processor chips, the M61500FP is the industry's first chip to combine QSound functionality with tone control features to provide a more cost-effective solution for customers. The QSurround licensing fee is bundled into the price of the chip, freeing customers from the inconvenience of licensing the technology themselves. "Mitsubishi is delighted to introduce a new family of sound processors that incorporate QSound Labs' QSurround technology," said George Riehm, senior product marketing manager at Mitsubishi Electronics America, Inc. "This family will provide customers with outstanding and cost-effective 'virtual surround' 3D sound performance for a wide range of audio applications." "We are very pleased that Mitsubishi chose our QSurround technology as an integral part of the M61500FP Sound Processor chip," said David Gallagher, president of QSound Labs. "This relationship provides QSound with a great opportunity for expanded exposure in the consumer electronics market." The M61500FP sound processor contains an electronic volume control that ranges from 0- -84 dB (and to negative infinity) for wide audio dynamic range; bass and treble tone controls for a bass boost of 0- +21 dB (in 3-dB steps) and a treble boost of 0- 9 dB (in 3-dB steps); and a five-input selector for tape, tuner, CD, auxiliary functions, and a dual-function fifth input, which can be used for record out (REC OUT) or microphone mix (MIC MIX) functions. QSurround Technology QSound's QSurround family of 3D audio processes is well suited to consumer electronic products. They meet the challenge of all multi-channel audio delivery formats while addressing issues of space constraints, budget and practicality. Specifically, QMDV provides a cost-effective solution for the virtualization of matrix surround-encoded stereo streams by eliminating the need for a separate matrix decoder. When the input signal is plain stereo, QSound's QXpander(tm) stereo soundfield expansion is applied. When the signal is in matrix surround format (typical of many current TV broadcasts and VHS videotape rental movies), virtualization takes place automatically creating the effect of a multi-speaker surround soundfield using only two physical speakers. Packaging, Availability and Pricing Mitsubishi's M61500FP sound processor is available in a 24-pin SSOP package with a 0.8-mm pitch. Samples are available now, with volume production scheduled for the fourth quarter of 1999. Pricing is $1.50 each in 20,000-unit quantities. Bruce
