Absolutely wrong.

Reagan took office in January 1981. His program was passed many months later. The Reagan program of economic deregulation and dynamic markets - capital and labor - is what demolished the Japan Inc. that liberals said was going to do us in.

George Gilder and I laughed about that on his thread when we recalled how the Dems all argued that we should emulate Japan Inc with state directed investment and economic policy, including such canards as lifetime work guarantees. That battle was lost by the "Atari" Dems and won by Reagan and the Gilderites.

America spent much of the 1980's restructuring - heck it's a constant process - and the dominance the US has today is the result. Japan has not yet recovered and the "lifetime" guarantees aren't worth the paper they weren't written on.
