to acheive 99.999 availability which i believe translates to a couple of minutes of downtime a year (both planned downtime such as maintenance, software upgrades and unplanned - system crashes) you need more than just an OS and Chip. Mostly you need mirrored disk systems and clustered nodes that can fail over quickly.

My Sun Ultra workstation doesnt achieve quite this level of reliability (nor do i expect it to) but i find it amusing to use the "uptime" command in Solaris and see that its been up and running for 147 days without a reboot.
