Hopefully, Bellsouth moves on now, and bails QWST out from the USWest merger. If QWST truly wanted to get bigger and have local, it should have sold itself. Now it is paying a huge premium for US Worst. It will have to deal with unions, regulations, etc... That is the reason that most mergers fail (it is always more difficult than anticipated and the synergies usually don't offset the premium). Especially difficult are the mergers of equals.

When I bought Qwest, it was for a nimble telco tech that would either execute itself to greatness, or sell out to the highest bidder. Now, I'm hoping that BellSouth or Deutsche Telecom (no US presence post Sprint/MCI) bails us out. Bellsouth presumable has done most of its due diligence with its 10% stake. It could buy the combined company, with much less dilution than Sprint acquisition. Maybe we'll get a bid prior to the Nov 2 vote.
