Portal Software Provides Business Infrastructure for Global Center

Portal's Infranet(R) Provides Flexibility, Real-Time Functionality Crucial to Complex Services Offered by Web Hosting Market Leader
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1999-- Portal© Software (Nasdaq:PRSF - news), a leading provider of business infrastructure software for Internet and next-generation communications services, today announced that the beta version of the next major release of its flagship software, Infranet 6.0, has been implemented by Global Center, the complex Web hosting division of Global Crossing Telecommunication (Nasdaq:GBLX - news).

Infranet 6.0 provides unparalleled real-time customer management and billing, to support Web hosting and hosted application-based services, IP access and service combinations that are characterized by complex, conditional usage.

Global Center plans to fully deploy Infranet 6.0 in the first quarter of 2000. As a result, the company will be able to monitor and respond to usage, develop and deploy services and sophisticated multi-service packages that most appeal to customers, as well as to quickly, effectively counter competitive offers from other providers.

Customers will in turn benefit from a wider selection of services, packages and price-points to suit their needs, as well as greater control over their accounts: Global Center will complement enhanced service offerings with better insight into customers' own Web site and network performance data, by integrating proprietary uCommand(SM) infrastructure technology with Infranet.

``We chose Portal's Infranet 6.0 because its scalable, portable architecture allows us to launch innovative services that take advantage of the unrivaled capacity of our world-class network, as well as to offer streamlined, optimal customer support,' said Don Detampel, president of Global Crossing's Global Center division. ``Infranet 6.0 provides the flexible infrastructure that can accommodate the incredible rate of change in our business.'

Global Crossing's Global Center division operates internationally distributed data centers that sit on-net to a 88,100 global fiber optic route mile network connecting over 170 international metropolitan areas. The network includes a Cisco powered IP segment operating at OC-48 (2.5 Gbps). Global Center hosts more than 300 top Internet brands including the Portal Web site, Yahoo!, ZDNet and eToys.

According to Forrester Research, the market for Internet hosting will reach $14.6 billion by 2003, while the market for application hosting -- that is, external support for packaged applications -- will grow to $10.1 billion by 2001.

``We are pleased to help market leaders such as Global Center gain a competitive edge and improve customer relationships,' said Steve Sommer, vice president of business development, Portal Software. ``Portal is providing the infrastructure that will allow Internet business models to change and speed the evolution of the successful, viable ones.' Infranet customers include leading service providers in the ISP, IP telephony and fax, and broadband access markets.
