I know many early Christians believed the 2nd Coming would happen very soon, just as many believe today. But still I know of no early Christian writings which referred to the 2nd Coming in the past tense.

Preterist beliefs seem to me to be based entirely on some very shaky interpretations of some passages from a book written by Josephus, which itself should be taken with a grain of salt in regard to some passages. Do you know any ancient Christian writers who regarded Josephus' writings as evidence of the 2nd Coming?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to argue you shouldn't belief the way you do - there are certainly lots more offbeat beliefs than this. But when you state that preterism was the "original apostolic teaching" or something like that, you are making an historical statement and I think someone should point out that historically this just isn't true.

The Parousia; Past, Present or Future?

"Some people believe and teach today that the coming of our lord Jesus Christ is an event which will take place in the future. I can understand how some might believe this but the fact is the bible does not teach his return in the future but in the generation and lifetime of the Apostles. The biggest mistake when reading the bible is usually the language. The bible was written for us but not to us. The bible is a series of letters and books written to 1st century churches and apostles. Therefore when reading the bible you must ask yourself what does the author intend for the verses to mean rather than asking yourself what the verses mean today in our language (because our vocabulary today is much different). The concept of language has changed very much from the 1st century until today and if you try and understand the verses as they would mean if they were directed to you then you would have a very different and fearful outcome. However like I said before, the bible is for us but not written to us. People today also make the mistake of comparing the scriptures of the bible to what they have believed in and been taught all of their life, and if it is different than their beliefs most will choose mans teachings over the bible scriptures. If the scriptures contradicts their teachings they will say that what the scriptures says is not what it means or they will say ?I don?t know what it means but I know it does not mean that.? instead of studying to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth(dividing the spirit from the natural) Now I ask you this, do you think that maybe what Jesus said is what he meant

I must say that what Jesus said is what he meant, for instance in Mat 24:14 ?And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.? Some people today still preach that the gospel has not been preached in all the world but you must first understand what Paul said in Cot 1:23 ?If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister?. The fact is the gospel has been carried into all the world but not in the sense that the word ?World? means to us but rather what it meant to them. In the book of Acts chapter 2 verse 5 it state that there was gathered everyone under heaven. ?And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.? Looking past the context of the vocabulary you must understand what the meaning is not what the word means today. When Jesus stated that ?then shall the end come.? he was not speaking of the destruction of the world but the end of the world as they knew it and the beginning of the new earth and new heaven. Jesus done away with the world system(old covenant) and established the new world system(new covenant). So you may ask when did the end of the world take place and then you refer to Heb 9:26 ?For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself

If you read the bible and believe what it says and believe in the whole bible then you cannot leave out any scriptures but you must believe in the whole truth. ?And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.? Then you must understand some of the following verses-

Mat 24:3 4 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."
