I don't think it will require much pushing, Gustave. Lebed will promise the people they can feel like Russians again. We shouldn't underestimate this appeal.

I would correct you slightly on the NATO/Vatican alliance. It was more a US/Vatican alliance. Probably the most heroic were John Paul II and CIA director William Casey. An unsung hero was AFL/CIO leader Lane Kirkland, who Casey had shuttling back and forth showing Lech Walesa how to get his union up and running. Kirkland died recently and there was no mention of his instrumental input into the fall of the wall.
