Paul and thread, article..Intel Ships Enhanced Software Solution for Managing and Integrating Remote Access Users; Single Point of Control for Policy Management Across Any Remote Access Device

October 5, 1999
BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation today announced its Shiva(a) Access Manager (SAM) 5.0, a remote access authentication, authorization and accounting tool designed to help network administrators and Internet Service Providers (ISP) manage and integrate their direct dial and virtual private networking (VPN) solutions.

New features in Intel's management software include cross-platform support for both Windows NT(b) or UNIX(b), an embedded database for faster and more reliable performance, and new tools for simplified administration. SAM 5.0's performance has also increased to approximately 200 user authentications per second, significantly expanding the number of users able to log on simultaneously during peak access periods. Also, by monitoring usage and available bandwidth, network managers can use SAM 5.0 to help implement policy management across the network as well as regulate and prioritize user access.

"Network administrators and ISPs managing growing numbers of remote users need a single point of control for policy management across any remote access device," said Michael Duffy, business unit manager for Intel's WAN Systems Operation. "SAM 5.0 helps these users implement the most effective corporate access policies to help them achieve the best possible return on their remote access investment."

Intel's SAM 5.0 features a new software development kit that helps simplify administration and increase accuracy through a library of commands allowing network managers to customize SAM 5.0 to any application environment. SAM 5.0 includes an embedded, scalable, enterprise-class database (Sybase(b) ASA SQL server) that further helps improves reliability and performance for customers with large numbers of remote users.

SAM 5.0's enhanced LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) support helps provide a single point of control for network managers and ISPs to automate the time-intensive task of managing and updating multiple user lists in various server locations. Designed for universal network adaptability, SAM 5.0 is simple for network administrators to install and manage across a heterogeneous network.

"Intel has continued to improve its access management product in the areas of performance, scalability and interoperability," said John Morency, executive vice president at Sage Research Inc. "The result is a stronger option for users implementing access-based policy management for integrated dial and VPN solutions."
