In PC Data's latest report on August retail sales volumes, Intel's USB tethered PC camera market segment share is 33 percent and has increased an average of five percent a month since June. This leadership position is likely to grow as Intel expands its retail distribution. Intel(R) PC Camera Pack products will be available at mass merchants Wal-Mart and Sam's Club and the regional specialty shop Smart Wireless in the fourth quarter. Smart Wireless is a West Coast wireless retailer that plans to sell Internet-related services through subsidiary Smart Networks.net(a) and to carry PC peripherals that help people communicate over the Internet in fun and exciting new ways. "Our customers come to us for wireless products, but they're also shopping for other communications technologies and they want to go to one place to get it all," said G.T. Meili, director of technology services for Smart Wireless. "By offering Internet access and PC cameras, we see tremendous opportunity to expand our product line and better serve our customers." Intel introduced its first PC camera product in September 1997. With growing consumer use of the Internet and falling prices for PCs and peripherals, PC cameras have increased in popularity. Industry analyst firm Cahner's In-Stat predicts manufacturers will sell more than 2.4 million PC cameras by the end of 1999 and 5 million will be sold in the year 2000. Intel's product line features the Intel(R) PC Camera Pack and the Intel(R) PC Camera Pro Pack. Both products include a high-quality camera and software to make video phone calls, send video email and play fun camera games. The Intel PC Camera Pro Pack includes auto snapshot capabilities and the industry's first USB PC camera with a built-in video capture plug to bring live or recorded video into PCs. Family PC magazine named Intel's PC Camera as one of the Top 100 products of the year. It also received an Editor's Choice Award from CNet and an Excellence in Technology Award from the International Business Solutions showroom at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The Intel PC Camera Pro Pack is available for $129 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) or $99 after manufacturer's rebate.
