Dan3 - <Re: the same bin split vs. launch rules...>

I have no problem with your argument, per se.

I just get irritated when folks assume that, because you can't walk into Fry's and buy one, it must mean, for practical purposes the thing doesn't exist, when in fact, in the high volume launch scenario, significant sales may in fact be taking place weeks in advance of the official launch date, and availability at the launch date may be something entirely different from the low volume scenario.

I suppose the "if I can't see it, it must not exist" thing has merit when your arguing availability as a consumer. But this is an investment board....

Also, I really wonder how much the low volume style launch affects perceptions of AMD as a supplier going forward. But I see your point that AMD may have to do what it has to do due to its market and financial positions. I see AMD having to maintain a delicate balancing act keeping customer relations good and maintaining their credibility as a supplier, while at the same time releasing product in low volume to generate near term income. I believe the Gateway vs. AMD situation may be a visible casualty of the failure to maintain this balancing act, although this is certainly just speculation on my part.

Just my .02.
