Tuesday October 5, 11:02 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Novell to Integrate White Pine's CU-SeeMe Web Technology Into digitalme Internet Service CU-SeeMe Web Will Enable Millions of Novell Users Instant Access to Visual Communications on the Internet NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1999-- White Pine Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: WPNE - news), a leading provider of multimedia conferencing applications for the Internet and intranets, and Novell Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL - news), the world's leading provider of directory-enabled networking software, today announced that Novell will license CU-SeeMe© Web technology for integration into its new digitalme(TM) Internet service and its Novell instantme(TM) messaging client.
CU-SeeMe Web will allow Novell's instantme to be the first to offer full live video and audio capability in addition to its existing text chat capability.
Integrated into digitalme, CU-SeeMe Web will allow multipoint visual and audio communications to be established in a standard browser page using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. CU-SeeMe Web can be built directly into any portal interface and integrated with any web-based controls, banners, and layouts. In one of the first planned applications, users of Novell's digitalme product will simply click on the name of a person in their contact list, stored in the Novell Directory Service (NDS), to instantly create a live videochat.
digitalme is designed to help web surfers control their personal information online, access favorite web sites through a single Internet password, fill-in web registration forms automatically, and create digital address books that can be updated and accessed from any web device. CU-SeeMe Web will enable digitalme users to communicate visually over the Internet with services such as visual Instant Messaging (IM), topic-based videochat, videoconferencing, video email, visual IP call centers, live interactive web events and other innovative new applications that take advantage of the power of visual communications over the Internet. Novell also plans to integrate White Pine's MeetingPoint conference technology for multipoint capability of these communications services.
``Novell has recognized that White Pine technology can significantly enhance digitalme by offering visual communications and collaboration services to its members. Now Novell's installed base of 80 million users will gain the ability to communicate real-time with full multimedia video, audio and text capabilities,' said Killko Caballero, president and CEO of White Pine Software. ``We're very excited to be working with Novell because we expect this integration will significantly accelerate the deployment of CU-SeeMe Web technology over the Internet into the consumer, business to consumer, and enterprise markets.'
``We are very excited to be working with White Pine, a leader in providing visual communications for the Internet,' said John Gailey, director of Collaboration Partners for Novell. ``White Pine's technology provides an obvious added value to digitalme for instant communications in the corporate market.'
At the digitalme launch event today, White Pine and Novell demonstrated visual instant messaging capabilities established from a digitalme web page using CU-SeeMe Web. Through a MeetingPoint server, the companies also demonstrated web-based group videoconferencing and videochat over the Internet. CU-SeeMe Web will be demonstrated throughout the week at the Internet World trade show, booth no. 1155, in New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center.
