Well to be honest I'm not too high on the Amazon announcement myself... to me its much ado about nothing. But, they have something where a small biz can pay Amazon $9/month, and for that the small biz receives the Amazon infrastructure (Auctions etc.) to sell their wares on their site. Presumably this includes access to Amzn customer base, but I'm not sure about that.

Thats a pretty good deal, $9/mo for the amazon infrastructure, and once you get critical mass of small biz's signing up, you've got a mini-hypermart. I don't know whether it will pan out but I think that is the competition anyway.

The thing is, Amzn has these "buying circles" and regional info about its customers so they can offer a tab at the top of their site - "Austin zShops" or something, and every time you log in you get these local businesses accessible through the main amzn page. Its going to be hard to compete with that.
