Dan,

Yes, we can go toe to toe on quotes about the founding fathers. I have seen scores of sites that supply quotes attributed to the very same people on both sides of the issue. What does that prove?

It proves that at best these men were ambivalent in their beliefs. Willing to tell some people that they were religious, and willing to tell others they were not. Would a Christian who was really firm in their beliefs be willing to tell anyone that they didn't believe?

What these men really believed is obviously debatable. The only thing we know for sure is that the intentions of these founding fathers was to keep church and State separated, and that America should be a land that where all religions enjoy equal footing. those are the only only concepts that the founding fathers were willing to state emphatically on this subject.

Unless of course Emile finds a copy of the Babylonian Bill of Rights wherein it states that Judaiaism is a tool of the devil, and that Christians are all Jews, so therefore..... Oh never mind:-)

Meanwhile here is an interesting quote by one of those who was supposedly not a Christian.

I have read the Bible, cover to cover, more than once. I have been surprised (but no longer am) to encounter Bible-thumping Christians who thump it, but have not read it other then specific passages when directed.

Got a source for the Patrick Henry quote? And is it your contention that Mr. Henry was a Christian?

By the way, quoting from memory is fine, if identified as such -- we can't run around with everything we know documented in books.<g>

Incidentally, how about a working jackleg definition of Christian for this discussion: Someone who believes that Jesus was/is a being beyond mortal, and who still has a hand in the affairs of the world. I know it's simplified, but it would allow us to make judgements about writings with a minimum of hair-splitting. What do you think?

I am here to learn, and to teach, not to attack anyone here. Let's try to avoid name-calling and other uncivilities. I came by my knowledge and opinions honestly, and I will assume the same of you. Let's discuss!
