Zoltan was presenting as received opinion that Lehmann-Haupt was an "extreme left wing ideologue." I assume you disagree with that characterization. I'd call him a liberal. He's not a political animal. I don't believe he's associated with any public causes that I know of. You missed the point about the Pearl Harbor incident. The point was, Reagan saw nobody, black or white, at Pearl Harbor. He wasn't there. He said these words: "I remember the scene. It was very powerful." He claims he saw a scene in which a black soldier "cradled a machine gun in his arms," etc. There is no such battle footage of Pearl Harbor. And if there had been, how would it have shown that the Negro's only duties had been kitchen ones, for example? How did he get into his head the idea that THAT scene, that he "remembered," caused desegregation?! Why did he refuse to believe that the armed forces were desegregated not because of this "very powerful" non-existent scene he "remembered," but by Truman, three years later? What scene? He didn't see the scene he "remembers," though there was one similar to it, with a white John Garfield, in a movie. It is entirely speculation to guess that maybe he'd picked up the notion from this movie-- but it's understandable to try to figure out where the hell he DID pick it up, since it's mythical, and why he wouldn't give it up, so real did it seem to him, even when told the facts about when and how the Armed Services came to be desegregated. This reminds me of the OJ trial. Short of a signed confession, he was going to be acquitted; and even then, he would have been forced to sign or something. Unless a photograph of Reagan with a thought-bubble over his head inventing stories is shown, it's all misspeaking. Or fatigue. Or he was old. When it's clear as the day is long that the guy had a loose grasp on the difference between reality and fantasy. But not to worry! -- <<<<<<Regardless of any personal short-coming, he was able to look into a camera and make Americans feel safe, confident, proud, optimistic... >>>>>> The handwriting is on the wall, I fear.
