I think you should put it in the perspective that the Japanese economy has been closed to outsiders for centuries. It's part of what makes Japan, Japan. One thing we don't like to think about is how much contempt they have for non-Japanese. But they do make good stuff now. I am older than you, I can remember without reading about it in books, once upon a time "Made in Japan" meant it was junk. Now, that's changed, "Made in Japan" means it's the best, although I have a special fondness for German engineering, personally, but German (and Scandinavian) goodies are more expensive.
