I agree that Reagan was quite good at believing things that ought to have been obvious to him were untrue, e.g., that trees cause more pollution than industry. It's not necessarily "fabulation," it's believing something that's convenient. However, the environmental issues which should be fact-driven have become so politicised, that it's difficult for people who aren't scientifically trained to know what to believe, so they seem to decide WHO to believe. We see a lot of it on this thread, for example, and it doesn't mean that the posters are delusional, it means that they've decided to believe what fits in with their worldview, rather than vice-versa.

It's almost impossible to argue with "true believers," and make any headway at all.
