I've been reconsidering my position re: Intel crisis management. This was not a problem like the FDIV or serial number which affected every single person who bought an Intel-based PC. Instead, this was a technology that very, very few of the general public knew was coming, and which only affected the high-end customers. HP was the only company that had made any specific product announcement to the public. Intel's stock clearly has not been seriously affected by the delay, indicating that it's not considered a PR fiasco.

Instead, the crisis was with the Intel customers and suppliers (Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM, Samsung, Toshiba, NEC, mobo manufacturers, connector suppliers, etc.). The question becomes "how well have they communicated with those constituents?" My guess is that they're probably in very close touch. Someone posted some rumors (at least I think they were rumors) recently that Intel had a warchest to help cover any money lost due to this problem/delay. I wouldn't be surprised if that's true -- it would certainly be a key factor in managing this crisis. I'm sure they have other activities going on with their partners to help get past this.

This is probably a great example of why Intel places such a strong embargo on pre-announcing information before shipments.
