I don't believe in throwing money at the problem when there are qualitative issues that need to be addressed first. Parental involvement, better teacher qualification, crime control, etc. Increasing the number of teachers is not one of the better ideas, when there is already a big shortage. You just end up subsidizing the current head count which should be funded by the local taxes anyways.

Lisa,
The proper question is "What is wrong with government education?" The beauty of this proper form is that it answers itself.

I don't hear anybody complaining about the education their child got at the Catholic or other private school. I hear lots of complaints about the education kids DIDN'T get at the local government school.

>>TEST THE CHILDREN? ON NO!!!!!

Some parents in Gwinnett County are mightily upset over a little third grade exit exam
that their children have to pass. It seems that there are estimates that as much as 40
percent ? perhaps more ? of Gwinnett County third graders may not pass.

What does this mean? That?s an easy one. It means these kids aren?t learning. So, how
do the parents react? Well, from what I?ve seen it looks like the parents are mad at the
test! They want something done about this evil test that might hold their children back!

The problem isn?t the test. The problem is government schools. I dare say that the vast
majority of third graders who, thanks to caring parents, are in private school would
handle this test easily.

This whole controversy is so typical. You trust your children to the government for an
education --- they you blame the government when you child doesn?t learn.<<
