The argument is that when baby boomers start to retire they'll stop earning, stop putting money in their 401k and IRAs and start taking it out, and reallocate their portfolios to have more income and fewer growth stocks.

The 50+ age group knows a bear market fairly well and might never have put much money into the stock market (directly or via IRA's & 401K's). Just speculation on my part.
