Intel Investors - Intel Invests in ADMTek to add Switching Chips to its line of communications ICs. This will go a long way to give Intel a complete "portfolio" of ICs for the Data Communications Switching/Routing markets. Paul {===========================================}Intel invests in ADMtek to enter switch-chip market By Mark LaPedus, Electronic Buyers' News Oct 5, 1999 (1:16 PM) URL: ebnews.com SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Continuing its push into the communications-IC market, Intel Corp. has quietly acquired a small equity stake and formed a product development alliance with ADMtek Inc. (San Jose, Calif.), a supplier of switching chips. Under the terms of the agreement, Intel and ADMtek will co-develop a line of low-cost, single-chip switching ICs for use in Fast Ethernet networks. The new Layer 2-based products, to be rolled out in the early part of next year, will be based on switching chips from ADMtek and on physical-layer ICs from Level One Communications Inc. (Sacramento, Calif.), a subsidiary of Intel. The move enables Intel to enter the booming switch-chip market for Layer 2 applications — a market currently dominated by Allayer, Broadcom, Galileo and other suppliers. Officials from ADMtek confirmed reports about the company's alliance with Intel. "We've closed the deal with Intel," said Allen Lee, business development manager for ADMtek's subsidiary in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Intel officials said that the company has been in discussions with ADMtek, but claim that a deal has not been consummated. ADMtek's Lee added that Intel and ADMtek would roll out their first products during the first quarter of next year, but he did not provide details on Intel's investment in the company. Intel appears to be working with ADMtek for several reasons, including the fact that ADMtek's major shareholder is Accton Technology Corp., one of Taiwan's largest communications-equipment makers. 3Com Corp., Intel's counterpart in the communications-equipment arena, is also an investor in ADMtek.
