UK - Pace Micro Teams With Cisco On Cable Modem Tech Steve Gold, Newsbytes 09/02/1998 Newsbytes News Network (c) Copyright 1998 Post-Newsweek Business Information, Inc. All rights reserved. KEIGHLEY, WEST YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, 1998 SEP 2 (NB). Pace Micro Technology has announced it is teaming up with Cisco Systems [NASDAQ:CSCO] to develop a new line of TV set-top boxes (STBs) that support cable-based digital TV, Internet access, and telephony services. The move is a key one for Pace, Newsbytes notes, as the firm is poised for expansion into the field of digital STBs, riding on the back of a number of European digital TV services, and the impending launches of terrestrial and satellite digital direct to home (DTH) TV services in the fourth quarter of this year. Cisco, meanwhile, has been instrumental in the development of Internet Protocol (IP) switch technology, so allowing Pace to include its IP firmware technology in a digital STB saves Pace from "re-inventing the wheel" as far as this technology is concerned. Plans call for Pace to start shipping Cisco co-developed STB units next year, probably in the Spring, when Cable & Wireless Communications is planning a UK rollout of its cable-based digital TV service. According to Pace, the units will be the first products on the market to integrate both digital cable television and Internet technologies within one compact system. Under the alliance announced today, Pace will license Cisco's Internet technologies to provide high speed Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication functionality onto Pace's digital receiver/decoders for the consumer market. The two companies plan to jointly develop a range of digital STBs that include support for Internet telephony, Newsbytes understands. Charles Giancarlo, senior vice president of global alliances at Cisco, said that combining his company's Internet technology and Pace's digital expertise into a single consumer device "will provide a platform for the Internet to dramatically impact the way we work live, play and learn." Newsbytes notes that the Pace/Cisco digital STB will be the first unit in the world to be based on the new International Telecommunications Union (ITU) J.112 Data-over-Cable System Specification (DOCSIS-MCNS) standard. The J.112 specification is billed as provides an open, standards-based system for broadband connectivity to the home, while ensuring equipment interoperability. Cisco's Web site is at cisco.com .
