VoiceStream CEO: Co Solid In Face of MCI-Sprint Merger
October 6, 1999

NEW YORK -- VoiceStream Wireless Corp. (VSTR) Chairman and
Chief Executive John Stanton said he doesn't expect the merger of MCI
WorldCom Inc. (WCOM) and Sprint Corp. (FON, PCS) to directly
affect his company.

Stanton said Sprint has been an effective competitor in the wireless
business and consumer markets, but the combined company, to be called
WorldCom, may offer less of a challenge.

"We expect WorldCom to focus more of its attention in its wireless efforts
in the business market. Our business strategy is very much
consumer-oriented," said Stanton in an interview on CNBC-TV
Wednesday.

"The consumer market has more a robust growth pattern than does the
business market," he added.

Wall Street has concurred with Stanton's analysis of his company's
prospects. VoiceStream's share price closed Tuesday at 66 3/4, up 6.5%
or 4 1/16. The shares recently traded at 67 1/2, up 3/4, or 1.1%.

VoiceStream uses the European standard for wireless technology, Global
Systems for Mobile Communications, or GSM, which is used by 200
million customers world-wide. Less than 10 million people use each of the
two North American standard technologies, CDMA and TDMA, said
Stanton.

"We view GSM to be a huge advantage in terms of its global reach," said
Stanton. "Frankly, as the Internet and wireless communications converge,
we think that we get a huge head head start on the other technologies in
our delivery of data services."

VoiceStream has licenses in 22 of the largest 25 U.S. wireless markets.
