Drug-resistant TB has been breeding in the 3rd world for years. Even the drug-susceptible varieties require a year of continuous treatment. A much bigger problem than AIDS, though you'd never know it from the funding allocations.

Lisa, it is true that the Russian prisons have become a breeding ground for drug-resistant strains of TB, which are, as Steven points out, also rampant in the Third World. The problem, which Steven also notes, is sporadic and inadequate treatment because of lack of funds and facilities for treatment. A special horror in Russia at the moment is that the infected are not isolated as well as being only partially treated and then are released to infect the general population.

I can imagine it could be found in NYC. What cannot be found in NYC? Even the Nile Fever can be found there.

But seriously, there is a large Russian immigrant population in NYC, so that could account for cases breaking out there.
