I agree. It is often much more expedient to order a highly visible "crackdown" on a visible problem than it is to seriously address causes and consequences. Response to drug crimes is one example. Capital punishment is another: it saves no money, and it has repeatedly been shown to have no deterrent effect, but politicians know they can trot it out to great public acclaim whenever it is expedient to be seen "doing something about crime".

Public opinion should not decide on "rights". Rights can only be identified objectively. A right is only a "right" if it does not trespass on the inalienable right of another individual.

That is why there is no such thing as consumer, health, patient and economic "rights". Although many fools in this country think there are.
