However, copper lines have conduit, and that conduit is very valuable. Sure beats tearing up streets trying to lay new conduit to house your fiber. Assuming you could even get permission to do so.

I agree that no merger will take place until the USW deal is done. Why would you purchase a package of problems. It would make more sense to purchase it after all the work is done and success is assured, even if you have to pay much more.

It isn't in BLS' interest to buy QWST or any carrier.

I agree. My suggestion was only that the regulators won't stop them from doing something stupid.

I'm enjoying this recent QWST rally but I'm afraid it may be the last one we get until Global Crossing buys the whole thing, probably this time next year.

> In contrast, consider buying a pile of wasting copper junk

Although once you turbocharge that copper with xDSL it actually becomes rather cool.... However, the telephone companies have been shamefully lame and utterly clueless about providing this technology to bandwidth starved consumers. Millions of people are ready to pay for DSL but either don't know about it (clueless marketing), can't get it (clueless implementation), can't get it yet (clueless rollout), or need to get their last-pole-to-plug wiring changed because it won't support DSL (just generally clueless).
