Athlon 700 review by Winmag -

THE PC ANGLE - by Jonathan Blackwood
Fast as Lightning October 5, 1999 winmag.com
.....Excerpts ...

We recently tested a 700MHz Athlon-powered reference PC provided by AMD. It was equipped with 128MB of RAM, an 18GB Western Digital 7200-rpm ATA-66 drive and a Diamond Viper 770 Ultra+ video adapter with 32MB of RAM. Under Windows 98 Second Edition, this is far and away the fastest PC we've ever tested.

How fast? It garnered a WinScore mark of 169. This is 19% faster than the fastest Win 98 system we've previously tested, the Compaq Presario 5861, a 600MHz Athlon-powered PC.

It's 30% faster than the fastest Win 98 Pentium III-powered PC we've benchmarked, a 600MHz Micron Millennia Max using a Via chipset. And it's 35% faster than Intel's reference PC with the 820 chipset, Rambus memory and a 600MHz Pentium IIIB.

Expressed another way, the sum of all our tests indicates that this new Athlon PC provides 134% the performance of the Intel reference system, and 127% the performance of the Micron.

So is the war over? Nope, but AMD has sure won a battle. Intel has demonstrated again and again its ability to respond to competitive challenges, and to produce faster and faster chips in huge quantities. Don't count them out, and don't think they won't respond in the coming months with faster and faster chips.
