America Online and Lycos Form Strategic Alliance; Join to Bring AOL Instant Messenger to Lycos DULLES, Va. and WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1999-- Co-Branded Product Will Link Lycos Users to the 45 Million Member AIM Community Netscape Distribution Agreement Expanded in Scope and Duration America Online, Inc., (NYSE:AOL), the world's leading interactive services company, and Lycos, Inc. (NASDAQ:LCOS), the fastest growing Internet portal, today announced a strategic agreement to develop a custom version of AOL instant messenger for Lycos' 32 million registered users and to significantly expand their Netscape distribution alliance. Under the agreement, the AOL Instant Messenger (SM) (AIM) service will be available in Lycos Clubs, Lycos Chat and other areas of the Lycos Network later this year allowing Lycos users to easily communicate with fellow Lycos users as well as the entire AIM community of more than 45 million registered users around the world. The new instant messaging product is expected to be available to Lycos users in December, and Lycos users will be able to instant message -- that is, trade personalized and private online messages in real time -- with other Lycos users and members of the AIM community including family, business colleagues and friends. Under the agreement, Lycos will promote a co-branded version of the AIM software in its user registration process, while Lycos develops its own customized version of the AIM client.
