Is this further indication that the telecomm industry is going to be a free for all, first to market, fragmented, cut throat business in the immediate future (as if they are not already)? I hope so! With the recent mergers and the high rate of growth within telecom it's becoming apparent that each carrier will have critical mass (coverage wise) and roaming and interoperability is becoming less and less important. You don't think the TDMA and GSM fools will just surrender? Cut throat competition and data will speed the adoption of CDMA. Bux

it is becoming more apparent while there may be lots of talks about 3G standards, no one is sitting around waiting for it to happen. I don't think that the BT deployment proves anything. Since the rollouts of digital wireless, the talk about it's ability to do data has been there from the beginning. 9.6 KBps is fine for text based information, but I think that folks might be severely disappointed if they are expecting to surf the Web as they are now. That has to wait for 2.5 or 3G's higher speeds. It does prove what MSFT strategy is, to get into your pockets even more (whereas in the wired world they aren't). What do you think? De-regulation and de-monopolization created what? A bunch of start-ups headed usually by AT&T ex, who have great ideas and are now implementing them removed from the corporate culture of Ma Bell. That probably what will happen in Europe and other places that follow a similar path, provided they have a market and/or readily available VC capital. The next phase that we are entering in the US is local access de-monopolization, not that business hasn't had a choice for sometime. Wireless is part of that, albeit at a higher premium if you are a big user in the cellular/PCS. The only thing that going to irratate me about wireless, they are going to send me advertisements in a micro-billboarding affect. It gives the operators more revenue, but not a cost savings for the consumer. It going to add to further aggravation of the consumer and probably elevate the bar of hatred of the industry. Where it is all headed is anybodies guess.
