Yes, some thing are meant to be heard...I have actually plowed through it, yes (in translation, of course)....Now, I could not manage to get all of the way through Mallory's Morte d'Artur, which is several hundred pages, but the Song of Roland is relatively short....By the way, have you ever read Chesterton's "The Napoleon of Notting Hill"? Delightful!
