Thanks Eric. I don't argue that in the "long run," TDMA (upgraded by GUTS - generic UDP teleservices) and EDGE (enhanced data rates for global evolution - basically hi-speed internet telephony for TDMA and GSM) will be capable of faster data speeds. I also understand it is relatively inexpensive to upgrade from GSM to EDGE.

However, according to Nortel the TDMA carriers will be required to upgrade to handle the new channels. This upgrade and conversion from GSM to EDGE will take atleast 24 months. Meanwhile, CDMA 2000 is locked and loaded. They will be ready to rock and roll (supposedly) in six months.

Maybe I've got my panties in a twist over nothing, but isn't an 18 month lead quite significant (an eternity) considering how rapidly the wireless market is growing (data) and demand for wireless (voice)is exploding?

I'm just betting T will suffer from massive customer complaints and by the time they get around to rolling out EDGE 384 Kpbs packet (read: year 2003) the CDMA carriers will have taken away literally millions of T's customers (who will all, by then, have CDMA phones)?

Time will tell. And thanks for responding to my post.

Are your reasons the ones (royalties, wide margins, etc.) everyone has already discussed? Or would it be rude to ask you to quickly bullett your reasons for loving Q?

Please understand that reading about this stuff is painful for me. I am not an engineer. I have no one to talk with about it. But I find if I occasionally hit the keyboard - it begins to sink in. BTW, I wish I knew you were out there 10/7/98....

Thanks for your patience.
