(Off-topic, @Home cable modem service)

Ed, if you haven't done so already, DISABLE THE PROXY SERVER SETTING in your browser! Switch the setting to "directly to the Internet".

The @Home proxy server is "optional" and I find that the proxy server is usually slower than going directly to the Internet. It gets especially overloaded in the early evening, at least in my area.

One problem may be that I think this is one of the components that Microsoft forced them to use NT for...

The once expection is when downloading popular software from popular sites. It is always MUCH faster through the proxy server, at least during non-peak times, because the software will almost always be cached locally.

In the case of interactive sites like a broker or SI, the proxy server is just getting in the way, though.

I don't know that I would switch to DSL. I have BOTH @Home AND DSL (the DSL is for web servers - my DSL connection permits servers, and I do pay for that privilege :) ) and there is NO COMPARISON. OK, my DSL is only 192K, but, still, when I download software, I get speeds much higher than would be possible even with 1.5M DSL. I've seen actual download speeds as high as about 5Mbit/sec.
