Gary,

I don't know that I get better than 640k on average with my cable modem. I'll need you to do some speed "translating" for me:

My USR 56k modem usually displays transfer rates of ~4.0-4.5/s when I use Erols...I'm not sure what the units are though I'm sure you do.

With the cable modem it's more like 20-30/s, but when it's a very large file (only a small share of my actual activity) and transferring is smooth, the speeds registered are usually 50-80.

I'm not sure how this actually translates to "K" but my experience is that the cable modem is typically 5x faster but remarkably better (15x-20x) on large files. Basically, with the cable modem the connection usually waits on me and not vice versa.

The thing is I think I could get pretty much the same general effect with DSL, and if it saved me $300/year it would be worth it.

Incidentally, our cable system is not yet 2-way so I have to use the modem and phone line for dial-out. Then the requested data comes whooshing down the cable. They're scheduled to "2-way" my area by year's end.

The cable company, by the way, dropped its advertised speeds from 3MB to 500k, probably as a result of consumer complaints. I talked with one of their key tech/consumer rep people about 8 months ago and she admitted that advertising was way out of whack and that they lobbied for quite a while to get them to change the misleading ads.
