ATT needs AOL bad....troubles over at ATHM....FREMONT, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A. (NB) -- By Ken Woo, Newsbytes. The Fremont City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to impose minimum customer service standards for high-speed cable Internet access services.
The 4-0 vote came after numerous residents complained that AT&T's [NYSE:T] AtHome service suffered repeated outages, problems with log-ons and long periods on hold.
"We've been through months of discussions between the city, the users and AT&T and basically all parties agree that the new standards are reasonable and acceptable," city Administrative Assistant Dan Schoenholz told Newsbytes. "Many people felt that this was a good first step, but that the city should still keep an eye on things."
Under the new rules, AtHome must: answer 90 percent of all customer service calls within 30 seconds; all written and e-mail letters must be answered within 10 days; submit a 30-day notice for all rate changes; and include other payment options such as cash, credit card or check.
AtHome must also fix connection problems within 24 hours and all new subscribers must be connected within two weeks.
Failure to maintain these standards allows the city to fine the company $9,000 every three months or require it to provide certain services for free.
