(COMTEX) B: Brazil: 3Com launches cable modem
B: Brazil: 3Com launches cable modem

3Com wants to anticipate the technical specifications of the Brazilian
telecoms agency Anatel and launch in the market a cable modem
forInternet access via cable television networks. The company says the
device will be flexible to met any requirements to be made by Anatel,
thus fitting with the systems being introduced by Globocabo (Virtua)
and TVA (Ajato). 3Com already signed an agreement with TVA to supply
the cable modem to the customers for Ajato, and is already negotiating
to supply to Image TV, from Algar group, that is preparing its own
Internet service. 3Com is keen to firm a position in the Brazilian Web
market, expected to increase by 200% in 1999. The cable modem business
in Latin America is so far limited in Argentina where it generates an
income of US$14mil, and a figure to grow to US$50mil as it expands to
Brazil in 1999, while the Latin American figure is to reach US$500mil
within the next three years, with Brazil accounting for 30% of the
regional income. 3Com is active in partnering with Internet access
providers, and also with computer assembling companies. In Brazil 3Com
should invest US$200,000 in advertising until end 1999, a figure to
increase to US$1mil by year 2000.
