Why sell Comm Group: Most likely indicates that MOTO deal re Fab 30 gets busted. AMD decided that they will need all the capacity at 30 to pump out Athlon based on their internal assessment that Athlon is already a success and will be more successful in the future (Remember Dana Krelle's claim a couple of days back that Athlon is a success?).

AMD does need money short of Moto equity investment, thus the asset sale.

We'll know the complete story in CC shortly.

AMD reports a loss but beats expectations
October 6, 1999, 2:35 p.m. PT

<k>AMD, a company with grand plans but short-term difficulties, today soundly beat analysts' earnings expectations by 25 cents.

The chipmaker and Intel rival reported a net loss of 72 cents per share for the third quarter. It was expected to lose 97 cents per share for the quarter, according to financial analysts surveyed by First Call.

The company attributed its stronger-than-expected results to strong sales of its high-end--and higher profit margin--Athlon processor, as well 28 percent growth in its flash memory products from the quarter.

AMD, while suffering from production issues and fierce competition from Intel, has potential for a rosier future, analysts say.
