As a longtime holder of Loral/Globalstar I thought you all might be interested in hearing what must be one of the reasons for Iridium's failure. My father lives in the Abacos and recently had to buy an Iridium phone because of Floyd. He got the Kyocera model($1900)because the Motorolas were sold out. When I asked him what he thought, without hesitation, he said "it sucks". He notes that his call completion was about 50% with the quality ranging from OK but kind of garbled to unintelligible. He was plagued by "system busy" signals and variable quality of reception during calls despite remaining stationary. He basically demanded a refund but is settling for a trade to the Motorola version ($1500) and a fixed antenna for his home. I don't believe Iridium's failure is soley due to marketing....
