CHASE REVAMPS ITS WEB SITE WITH BEST IN CLASS TECHNOLOGY

New York, NY, October 6, 1999 - The Chase Manhattan Corporation (NYSE: CMB) recently completed the first phase of a multi-pronged effort to greatly enhance Chase's presence on the web and create a robust enterprise-wide platform for e-commerce applications. Using best-in-class technology providers, Chase rebuilt its Internet infrastructure to support current and future e-commerce activities and revamped its web site (www.chase.com) to be more customer-centric.

"A well designed and technologically sophisticated web site is vital to the success of commerce in the digital era," said Janet Wynn, Senior Vice President of Chase.com, the Chase unit responsible for overseeing Chase's key Internet assets and for developing joint ventures and marketing alliances with Internet companies. "We have created a strong and flexible foundation that will enable Chase to take advantage of future opportunities as the Internet becomes the center of commercial activity in the twenty-first century."

The new infrastructure includes 35 new or upgraded components. Key among them:
Upgraded web servers and firewalls for enhanced security;
Upgraded search engines to find information on the site more effectively;
Improved MIS servers for more accurate information on the site usage;
New authentication servers that will support a single sign-on for multiple product lines;
New content management servers to support the integration of multiple applications on a single web page.

"We've built a common foundation, using a common methodology and a common set of tools in just under five months from design to production - a great accomplishment in a large, diverse organization," said Michael Mazza, Vice President and Technical Director for Chase's Internet Project Office. "This common foundation will significantly reduce the investment needed to support multiple applications on the web, speed an application's time to market, and free resources within the various Chase businesses to focus on developing customer-specific applications."

To meet Chase's high standards for consistency, scalability and speed to market, Chase teamed with best-in-class technology providers, including Andromedia, enCommerce, FutureTense, iXL, Oracle, Sun Netscape Alliance, Sun Microsystems and Verity. Mr. Mazza stressed the importance of working with the right vendors, companies that have both the expertise and ability to support the project throughout its various stages. As part of the vendor selection process, Chase developed a comprehensive evaluation model and obtained feedback from every business area on each vendor and the proposed processes.

Another key element of the project was the redesign of the web site itself. Chase redesigned the site with an eye toward creating a consistent look and feel throughout the site's 2,200 pages, as well as significantly enhancing navigation within the site. Chase also added a new content management tool to facilitate the development of web pages corporate-wide and shorten the time needed to administer and refresh web sites.

The launch of this revamped site is the first step in an ongoing process for delivering greater functionality to Chase customers via the Internet. Future efforts will include new functionality, particularly the ability to let customers customize their Chase home page, improved customer inquiry and response mechanisms, as well as a host of new applications from various Chase businesses.

Among the new services for consumers that will soon be available via www.chase.com:
The extraordinary convenience of a single sign on, with a consistent password, to access online banking, credit card and mortgage accounts;
ChaseShop.com, a secure and convenient way to shop that includes special offers for Chase customers, developed in partnership with ShopNow.comsm;
Currency to Go, the first web site service that offers 75 foreign currencies online with no fees or commissions;
An enhanced Chase Home Finance site, including a Chase branded version of Microsoft's MSNtm HomeAdvisor;
New proprietary financial planning and retirement tools and calculators.
