The way I read it is that E was not belittling the rear echelons. What she was assailing (and correctly in my opinion) is that RR implied that his duty was as rough in the details (like living conditions) as frontline duty. And for one as smart and worldly as a President ( or Presidential material) that is bad. Misrepresentation. <edit> Looks like I'm covering trodden ground...

I think there's pooped execs, and there's battle-weary, wife-starved, soldier-heroes. I think the first pretending to be the second is creepy. This is standard, garden-variety ethics, not to mention taste, and not a bit esoteric. As I said, <<<My position is that neither the fabulating President, Reagan, nor anyone else, should pretend to have made sacrifices they did not. It is not only just creepy, it trivializes the sacrifices of those who ACTUALLY MADE THEM. For example, to claim commonality of sacrifice with those who had not been able to make love to their wives for a long, hard, dirty, dangerous, and heartbreaking time, when you had been catching your zzz's next to yours in Hollywood is NOT NICE. At best. It's like sporting a purple heart you bought in a pawn shop. Expressing disgust at that action is hardly saying that all those who didn't earn purple hearts should be ashamed. For God's sake. Where are you coming from?>>>
