Putin apparently had Lebed in mind for the "Governor-General."

That is amazing, considering Lebed's "Figaro" interview, in which he basically accused the Kremlin of being behind the apartment house bombings! However, the scuttlebutt is that when Putin met with the ex-premiers & Duma leaders Tuesday, both Zyuganov and Yavlinsky opposed the appointment of Lebed. (Maybe they just don't like the "Governor-General" idea: the title alone is straight out of the 19th century Caucasian War.)

As for moving the refugees to the "Potemkin Village" in the north, that smells like 1944 to me.
