I agree with your skepticism re self installing DSL by buying an off-the-shelf kit. Based on my experience when it took 3 teams of BEL technicians over 3 weeks to install DSL on my PC, during which time they rendered my system totally unusable, I just have to believe that it's a concept that will die as soon as consumers try to do it on their own. Incidentally, BEL tried 2 non-WSTL modems that just couldn't make it before they successfully installed an external WSTL. Now it's sheer delight---except when BEL net went down for 2 days. (What agony having to go back to 56K until the net came back on the air!)
