maybe he wanted to make belief in him an act of faith, rather than of science,
I've seen this before as the ultimate dodge, God will work in ways that won't reveal himself. Well, this premise can be studied. How big a god could get by in the universe he created and still go unnoticed? It all boils down to determinism. Unless our universe is fated, is has a future that is locked in place, it is unpredictable. UNPREDICTABLE! even in the abstract. That means that the all knowing all seeing cannot guide the universe unless it guides it in every detail. There cannot be any free will unless there is enough uncertainty in future to preclude the kind of control necessary to guide us at all. If God is staying behind the seens, he is also not influencing us. Even magic has implications.

Does this destroy faith? Not at all. Faith is a state of mind, much like guiding a ship to the north star whether it agrees with a compass or not. If faith is directed toward a successfull goal then evolution teaches us that it will prevail. It's much like the great conspicuous plumage of the bird of paradise, it may make it more likely to be seen and eaten, but it also makes it more likely to mate. It's only when faith, or stubborness as it is known in other circumstances, goes against the way things really works that it becomes a detrement. It's like those cultists in California, no matter how much faith they had that there was a spaceship hiding behind the comet, they were just as dead.

Ever notice how inefficient God is?

He recycles everything in nature, energy, matter, food chains, O2 - Co2 cycles.

But then he goes and creates 100 billion galaxies, with 100 billion stars each - for 1 race of people. And then he gives us a few thousand years of existance (Christ IS supposed to return and lead us to heaven, right?) to explore all this.

Doesn't that make you feel special?
