Randy -- stock market investments are not counted as savings -- which, if I see your thinking correctly, is where Americans chose to put their money. Unfortunately, these 'savings' can vanish -- poof -- and they are gone. Ask the average Japanese household what this feels like. They put most of their money into stocks and real estate in the eighties at silly, high multiples. Their stock index peaked ten years ago and is still down fifty percent from the top! Small caps dropped by over 80% from the top. Guess what. Japanese don't like buying stocks anymore.
