I think age is a real problem. Because once the mind starts to go HOW do you ease the guy out? That was a problem with FDR. But you can't have them too young either- or they don't have caution and experience. 55-65 is probably optimal. But that's just a guess. I'm sure there are statistical tables that could tell us when the gross dropoffs in mental skills occur- one of them is around 70 if I recall. And they go down pretty steeply after that. Of course that is only statistically speaking- some people retain their acuity, but HOW to KNOW who they are? It's a pretty big gamble.
