While we're sharing "how I got into Q" stories....

I had mostly just invested in safe mutual funds at Fido until 1997, at which point I decided I should branch out a bit. For guidance, not knowing much about the markets, I turned to the four-page newsletter that Fido used to distribute with its monthly statements. It contained regurgitated stock recommendations from Standard and Poors, particularly their 25-or-so stock "Platinum Portfolio" and "Fair Value Portfolio". QCOM showed up in the latter as an "undervalued" equity, in among a bunch of mostly far more conservative issues (and quite a few that turned out to be clinkers since then, like COMS).

I didn't know much about it, and certainly nothing about the wireless market, but I took my entire IRA contribution that year and bought a couple hundred shares at 45+. It seemed to perform pretty strongly (at least compared to COMS and AMD, which I was also holding at the time!), so in December I added 100 more. And there it sat, doing very little, until I noticed in late March of this year that it had curiously gained gained 10 points in a single day. And then did the same thing the next day. I decided to investigate why this would be happening, found the Yahoo QCOM thread, then from there found this venue. The rest, as they say, is history. (I've since added just a little - ahem - a little more to my Q holdings.)

So, in short, I got into Q because it was touted as a "value" stock. ROTFL! Little did I know I'd invited a baby Gorilla into my house. But we seem to be coexisting comfortably, even if she's now almost ten times bigger than when I got her. Hey, if need be, I'll buy the place next door and knock it down to get extra room. <g>

Of course, this doesn't begin to address the debt of thanks I owe the folks here for their insight, knowledge, experience, support, and kind words after that - without which I clearly not have had the fortitude or stamina to ride the roller-coaster swings of the last four months in particular. You know who you all are, and you have my eternal gratitude.
